Now we’re going to take a closer look at the Marking Menu, and you’ll learn how to customize it. If the Extrude command is open, type the escape key to close it, and if you’ve created the extrusion, delete it but don’t delete the sketch. When you’re finished you should be in the Part Modeling environment, and Sketch-1 should be visible in the graphics area.

Now let’s look at the commands in the Marking Menu. Right click in the graphics area. As you become more familiar with the commands and the methods of evoking them you might want to change some of the commands in this menu, but this takes a little more thought than you might expect. For one thing, the Marking Menu is driven by the environment. This is the Marking Menu in the Part Modeling environment, and for now I just want you to notice that it has a Fillet command, an Extrude command, and a Revolve command.

Now close the menu by right or left clicking in the center. Open Sketch-1 by double clicking it, and then right click in the graphics area. As you can see, this menu is different. In fact every environment has a different menu.

If you look at the top of the menu you can see that it evokes the Line command. You also know that typing the L key on your keyboard evokes the command. So you can use the Line command in the ribbon, which is slow. You can type the L key, which is fast, and you can do a vertical mouse gesture, which is also fast. Which method you like to use will drive the customization of this menu. For example, if you feel more comfortable using the L key to evoke the line command, you might want to replace this command with another command. I used the Line command to demonstrate this point because I’ve already shown you that you can type the L key to evoke the command.

As you become more familiar with Inventor’s commands you’ll know more about how to customize the menus, and the more you know the more complicated it gets. For example, in the 2D drafting and Customization course you learn how to setup custom keyboard commands. So you’ll be able to customize keyboard commands and Marking Menu commands.

The reason I’m telling you this now is you need to practice using different methods of evoking commands to determine which method is comfortable for you to use. So during the course when I evoke a command you might try using different methods of evoking the command. Learn the method that suits you best, and use that method.

You’ll get a detailed description of customizing the Marking Menu in the 2D Drafting and Customization course, so for now I’ll just give you a quick introduction. Close the menu, and then click the Tools tab and select the Customize command. Now click the Marking Menu tab. This is where you customize the menu, and since the dialog box was opened while the 2D Sketch environment was active the environment is set to 2D Sketch.

You can customize the menu in a different environment by changing this combo box. Environments that have sub-environments can also be customized. To change a command, select it. Type a keyword to search for the command, and then select the new command. For now I want you to leave the commands set to their defaults, and as I said, as you proceed through the course you’ll have a better understanding of how to customize them. So close the dialog box.

The main thing I want you to take from this lesson is the need for you to explore different methods of evoking commands to figure out which method you prefer. You already know that you’re going to perform mouse gestures while I click commands. So you’re not locked into using the method you see on the screen.

I also want you to try to use keyboard commands, because keyboard commands are fast and easy to use. Before you continue to the next lesson, extrude the profile 1-inch. Once you’ve done that, set the view normal to the end of the pin. Click the Look At command, and then select the face on the end.
