How to Use Autodesk Products for Free and Legally

I spend a portion of my day answering questions on CAD forums and this question pops up quite a bit. How can I obtain a free copy of Autodesk software?

Nine times out of ten the answer others give is to download it illegally. This is not smart, and it’s not necessary. Through the Autodesk Education Community, you may be able to qualify for free and/or discounted access to a large assortment of software from the Autodesk catalog.
